Luminous Wall Art, Infused Into Aluminum

Metal prints aren't printed on anything. Your image is infused as dye directly into a coated aluminum panel, so the picture lives inside the surface instead of sitting on top of it — which is why colors look lit from within and fine detail stays razor sharp.

The sealed, non-porous surface is waterproof, weatherproof and scratch-resistant, so metal holds up in rooms most wall art can't handle — kitchens, bathrooms, covered porches, busy hallways. It wipes clean with a damp cloth. Independent light-stability testing puts the image life at two to four times that of traditional photographic paper. Keep it out of direct sunlight and it will look the same in a decade as it does the day you hang it.

Choose from four distinct surfaces, from brilliant high gloss to translucent metallics, in sizes from 5x7 up to 40x60. Every print arrives ready to hang, with float mounts, inset frames and standoff posts available. The aluminum itself is post-consumer recycled and fully recyclable.

Whether it's a landscape that deserves to glow, a gallery wall that needs to feel modern, or a piece for a space where paper wouldn't survive — upload your image and see it come to life.

Questions About Metal Prints
  • Which hanging option should I pick?

The float mount is included and it's what most people want — a hanger bonded to the back that holds the panel a half inch off the wall, with nothing visible from the front. The 3/4" inset frame does the same thing with more depth, which suits larger pieces. Standoff posts put four visible metal caps at the corners and hold the panel further out — the most contemporary look. No hanging hardware is for pieces going into a frame you already own. If you're not sure, take the float mount. See the How It Hangs tab for photos of all four.

  • Is my photo right for a metal print?

Almost certainly, if you pick Gloss or Satin — those work with any subject, and the only question is how much light the wall gets. The two sheer surfaces are different: there's no white ink in the process, so anything white in your photo comes out as bare silver aluminum. Beautiful on a sunset or city lights, wrong for a portrait, a wedding photo, or anything with snow, clouds, or a white background. The Choose Your Finish tab walks through all four, and we keep samples of each at both stores.

  • Why do the big ones take so much longer?

We produce metals up to 12x18 in house, so those move fast — often the same day at West Bloomfield. Anything 16x16 and larger is built by our production partner and shipped to us, which adds eight to ten business days. It's the honest trade for panels at that scale. Check the Production Times tab for exact timing, and if you're working to a date, call the store and we'll quote a rush before you order.

  • Where can I hang one?

Places you wouldn't put anything else. The surface is sealed and non-porous, so humidity doesn't touch it — bathrooms, kitchens, covered porches, finished basements, a hallway where things get bumped. It wipes clean with a damp cloth. The one thing to avoid is the same for any wall art: a wall that takes direct afternoon sun.

  • Metal, acrylic, or canvas?

Metal is the most durable and the most luminous — color looks lit from within, and it survives rooms paper can't. Acrylic has more physical depth and a glassy front face; it reads as more of an object. Canvas is matte and textured, warmer and quieter, and it suits traditional rooms where a reflective surface would feel out of place. All three hang without a frame.

Every metal print arrives ready to hang, with the float mount included in the price. What changes between the options is how far the panel sits off the wall and whether you see the hardware.

A hanger bonded to the back that holds the panel a half inch off the wall, so the piece appears to hover with nothing visible from the front. Wood on our in-house sizes, metal on 16x16 and larger. Style and selection vary by print size.

Hardware hidden · deeper float

The same hidden-hardware look with more depth behind the panel. That deeper shadow line suits larger pieces and rooms with heavy trim, where a thinner float can look slight.

Hardware visible · contemporary

Four polished caps at the corners hold the panel well off the wall. Here the hardware is part of the look rather than hidden — the most modern of the four, and the one that reads most like a gallery installation.

The panel on its own. Choose this if it's going into a frame you already have, into a display case, or if you'd rather handle the mounting yourself.

Corners

Sharp square corners are standard on every size. Rounded corners are available for a small additional charge if you'd rather soften the edge — worth considering on pieces hung at eye level in a hallway or anywhere people pass close to them.

All four surfaces use the same infused aluminum process, so color accuracy and detail are identical across them. What changes is how the surface handles light — and, on the two sheer options, whether the bare metal becomes part of your image. Start with the room: bright, window-facing walls want a low-sheen surface. Then look at your image.

Gloss metal print surface Most popular

Gloss

A brilliant white, high-gloss surface with the deepest blacks, the most saturated color and the sharpest apparent detail of the four. This is what most people picture when they imagine a metal print, and it works with any subject. It's also the most reflective — give it a wall that isn't facing a window or a bright fixture.

Satin metal print surface Best for bright rooms

Satin

The same color and detail on a smooth, very even surface that scatters light instead of mirroring it. Minimal glare. The safe choice for a bright room, a hallway lit from overhead, or anywhere the piece will be viewed from an angle.

Sheer Glossy metal print surface Specialty surface

Sheer Glossy

Printed on a translucent base, so bare aluminum shows through the lighter areas of your image and highlights take on a real metallic shine. Spectacular on sunsets, water, city lights and anything with strong contrast. Not for portraits or images with large white areas — see the note below.

Sheer Satin metal print surface Specialty surface

Sheer Satin

The same metallic translucency as Sheer Glossy with the glare pulled back. Built for landscapes, architecture and high-contrast work hanging in rooms with a lot of ambient light. The same caution applies.

A note on the sheer surfaces

There is no white ink in this process. On a sheer print, anything white in your photo reads as bare silver aluminum rather than white, and skin tones can pick up a metallic cast. That's exactly what makes them stunning on a sunset — and exactly why we don't recommend them for portraits, group photos, wedding images, or anything with large white areas like snow, clouds or a white background. Still unsure? Stop by either store — we keep samples of all four on hand.
