Gallery-Style Wall Art — No Glare, No Glass
A standout mount is the shortest distance between a photograph and a finished wall piece. We print it on luster photographic paper, bond it to a 3/4" board with a clean black edge, and it's done — no frame to buy, no mat to cut, no glass to catch the light from every lamp in the room. The thickness is the whole idea: it sits proud of the wall and throws a real shadow, which is where the name comes from.
Sizes run from 4x5 up to 24x30, and everything is printed and mounted here in our own shop. Pieces 11x14 and under include a kickstand as well as wall-mount cutouts, so they can hang or stand on a shelf, a desk, or a mantel. Larger sizes come with metal wall clips, anchors, and screws in the box. It's the most affordable way we make to put something real on a wall, and the one that lets the photograph do all the talking.
A finished standout comes out a quarter inch smaller on each edge — half an inch off the width and half off the height. So a 16x20 finishes at about 15.5x19.5. That's the trim allowance for cutting the print and board together. If you're fitting a specific space or matching a set, tell us and we'll confirm exact dimensions before we make it.
Questions About Standout Mounts
-
What exactly is a standout mount?
A photographic print bonded to a rigid 3/4" board with a black edge, ready to hang with nothing else added. It's the cheapest way to get a finished, frameless piece on a wall — no frame to buy, no mat to cut, no glass. The thickness is the point: it stands off the wall far enough to cast a shadow, which is where the name comes from.
-
How does it hang?
Depends on size, and either way everything comes with it. At 11x14 and under you get wall-mount cutouts on the back plus a kickstand, so you can hang it or stand it on a shelf, desk, or mantel — useful for a piece that might move around. At 12x18 and larger, metal wall clips come in the box along with the anchors and screws. See the Materials tab for photos of both.
-
Standout, canvas, metal, or acrylic?
A standout is the most affordable of the four and the most photographic — it looks like a print, because it is one, just made rigid. Canvas is textured and warm. Metal is luminous and survives humidity. Acrylic has physical depth and reads as an object. If you want the photo to speak for itself without the material adding anything, a standout is the one.

How long does it take?
We print and mount these ourselves, so they move quickly — check the Production Times tab for the current estimate by size. Rush is available on most sizes if you're working to a date; call either store and we'll confirm before you order.
What a Standout Is Made Of
Two parts: a photographic print, and the board it lives on. Both are put together here.
The Print
A luster photographic print, made on our own equipment on the same resin-coated stock we use for enlargements. Semi-gloss with a slight tooth to it, which keeps glare down in a lit room and holds deep blacks without turning into a mirror. It's the surface most portrait and wedding photographers order, and it's the only one we mount this way — luster handles the bare, unglazed presentation better than a high-gloss finish would.
The Board
A 3/4" high-density foam core panel from Pacific Mount, finished black on the edges so the profile reads as a clean dark line rather than a raw cut. The print is bonded with a pressure-sensitive adhesive — no heat, which means nothing gets exposed to a press. The result is rigid, light for its size, and thick enough to throw a real shadow on the wall.
Ready to Hang, No Frame
The back is pre-drilled at the factory for flush hanging, so nothing needs to be added. At 11x14 and under, that means wall-mount cutouts plus a kickstand — hang it or stand it on a shelf, desk, or mantel. At 12x18 and larger, metal wall clips ship with the piece along with anchors and screws, so everything you need is in the box.
One Thing to Know
A standout has no glass and no laminate over it — that's what makes it look clean and modern, and it also means the print surface is exposed. Keep it off a wall that takes direct afternoon sun, don't hang it where hands will brush it, and dust it with a dry soft cloth rather than anything wet. Treated normally it holds up for years.
